New Canaan edged by Ridgefield, 1-0, in FCIAC girls soccer final

New Canaan’s Olivia Bognon (13) defends as Ridgefield’s Tasha Riek works with the ball during the FCIAC girls soccer final Thursday at Warde High School. — Christian Abraham/Hearst Connecticut Media photo The New Canaan Rams weren’t really on anyone’s radar as a contender for the FCIAC girls soccer championship when the season began in September. Surprising everyone and getting to the final, however, doesn’t make coming up one goal short feel any better. After nearly 70 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Ridgefield Tigers received a goal from sophomore Grace Michalowski and went on to defeat the the Rams, 1-0, for the conference championship Thursday night at Fairfield-Warde High School. Faux stone wall gets P&Z’s attention too

The faux stone retaining wall on Park Street has landed Merritt Village developer Arnold Karp in front of Town Council and, this week, Planning & Zoning Commission. — Greg Reilly photo Developer Arnold Karp assured the Planning and Zoning Commission on Oct. 24 that materials being used in the Merritt Village project will meet all requirements. Karp said while he’s heard public criticism of the initial work, “I don’t think it’s warranted,” because less than 1% of work has been completed. “You’re criticizing something that hasn’t been built yet,” he said. “Let us get further on down the line,” said Karp, telling the P&Z that what’s been completed is “mostly…

    Letter: O’Dea has earned re-election

Editor, Advertiser: Tom O’Dea has well earned re-election as our state representative for the 125th District. Moderate and civil, O’Dea has become a point person for bipartisan efforts, yet a distinguished leader in seeking to reverse the fiscal policies that have squandered Connecticut’s strength over years of one-party rule. While fully cognizant of the persistent appeal of additional revenue for our state, O’Dea does not share his opponent’s enthusiasm for tolls, recognizing that tolls are a regressive form of taxation that falls hardest on drivers least able to pay. Of major importance, O’Dea completes an outstanding legislative team that includes Rep. Fred Wilms and Senators Toni Boucher and Scott Frantz.…

    Letter: State senate needs Haskell

Editor, Advertiser: Election Day will be here in less than a week. It is important that we all vote. For my part, I will be voting for the Democratic slate. In particular, I would like to speak about Will Haskell, a new light on the political horizon. Will is running for the 26th District State Senate. He is focused on the transportation and infrastructure issues that affect all of us, and reducing gun violence, and bringing fiscal sustainability to Connecticut. When you meet Will, you will encounter someone with intelligence and common sense beyond his years. Added to this is an energy and a vitality that could really make a…

Letter: Bergstein’s proposals sound, fiscally responsible

Editor, Advertiser: There are many critical issues central to the election this November. I am a firm believer that a person should choose a candidate that best represents their views on the issues, regardless of party. While this approach involves research and time, we will all be better served and elect representatives that stand for our values if we do so. Many thanks to the New Canaan League of Women Voters for posting candidate responses to set questions on their website this year.   There are a number of new candidates to consider. It is important to look at their plans for solving the fiscal crisis and for bringing new…
